For any brand, that means it’s not enough to simply communicate who you are and what you do; what’s more important is to align yourself with people’s needs and desires, so that your brand becomes the preferred solution.

Why should I consider creating a design system since I already have brand guidelines?

Brand guidelines help to standardize overall brand-level communications, whereas a design system works to streamline how individual brand collateral and your product are produced. Taking a mobile app as an example, brand guidelines may define logo and typographical treatment, and a design system could make sure that the implementation of interactive patterns and user interface components are consistent throughout the app.

When do I need a brand revamp or a rebrand?

Generally one would consider a brand revamp or even a rebrand when something happens on the business side that has a significant impact on how the brand may be perceived. Considering how infrequently that happens, it is a good idea to keep the brand fresh: while developing the brand based on the branding guidelines, allow it to “break” the rules every now and then in response to changes in society maybe - just like a real person.
